What's the deal with retainers?

If you've recently completed your treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics, our entire team would like to congratulate you, again! Now, after your braces have been removed, we will provide—or have provided you by now—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized.

Retainers, you see, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until your bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by our doctors is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

If you have additional questions about retainers or your treatment here at Tidewater Orthodontics, please give us a call! Happy holidays!

Do cold germs actually live on your toothbrush?

Fall is here, and with it the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, our team at Tidewater Orthodontics will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Hope this tip helps! Feel free to call us if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Candy Buy Back at Tidewater Orthodontics!

In an effort to promote a safe and healthy Halloween for kids, Tidewater Orthodontics this week is buying back the candy that young trick-or-treaters collected this year. But here's the twist: we work with a nonprofit organization called Smiles Change Lives through the 2010 Candy Exchange, and will donate $1 to Smiles Change Lives for each pound of candy collected. Smiles Change Lives, which has treated more than 1,200 children since 1997, helps kids from low-income families receive braces.

Our goal is 1,000 pounds of candy. This entire week, we will be accepting donations of candy in exchange for goodie bags containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, coupons and other items. Thanks to Sandra J. Pennecke at the Virginian-Pilot for helping spread the word!

“Our ultimate goal is to get kids braces who otherwise wouldn’t get them,” said Dr. Dailey. “We also want to call attention to tooth decay and try to prevent kids with braces from damaging them during Halloween time.”

A raffle will be held for door prizes, and a special prize will be given out to the person who brings in the most candy.

We hope to see you this week!

Happy Halloween from Tidewater Orthodontics!

happy halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

Trick-or-treat! In the spirit of this weekend's sweet and spooky holiday, our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics would like to remind all of our patients in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake to be safe while celebrating with friends and family. The American Association of Orthodontists were kind enough to provide trick-or-treaters with some tips for a ghoulishly good time.

A few Halloween safety guidelines before you head out:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment, including sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty goodies. If you happen to damage your braces, please give us a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone.

We wish you all a safe, fun and happy Halloween!

Ask Tidewater Orthodontics: Why the Damon System?

Drs. Ashby and Dailey and our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics are pleased to offer The Damon® System for our patients in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake. Damon braces allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.

Now, you're probably saying, "OK. Give me the specifics on how Damon braces are an advantage."

Time-Saving

Damon's innovative technology of self-ligating braces saves you time in orthodontic treatment. The Damon system allows for fewer trips to our office, as well as faster movement of your teeth than with traditional braces. The light forces applied by Damon braces are "biologically compatible" meaning that they work with your body for gentler and quicker tooth movement.

Comfortable

Damon System braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows us to use far lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions. That makes your treatment not only shorter, but it is also far more comfortable.

Because of its unique sliding door, the Damon bracket allows us to use high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth movement. This means less pressure on your teeth for more comfortable treatment. Not every orthodontist uses Damon self-ligating braces. The reason we do is simple: it means your experience in uncovering your radiant new smile will be more comfortable and convenient than ever.

To learn more about the Damon System, or to schedule a consultation with Drs. Ashby or Dailey, please give us a call. Have a wonderful week!

Tidewater Orthodontics want to know: Are you wearing your mouth guard?

This month, Drs. Ashby and Dailey, as well as our entire staff at Tidewater Orthodontics, want you to be extra careful with your braces and appliances. After all, September marks the start of fall sports and an increased risk to mouth and facial injuries. September also happens to be National Childhood Injury Prevention Month, and we thought it’d be a good idea to share a few sobering facts about sports and facial injuries, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists.

*More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Collision and contact sports have higher injury rates—baseball, soccer, basketball and football account for about 80% of all sports-related emergency room visits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

*Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt.

*Of the parents whose children do not wear a mouth guard, 84 percent say it's because the league or coach does not require it, according to the AAO.

*The average high school baseball pitcher can throw a fast ball between 75-to-85 miles per hour. This compares to being hit in the mouth by a speeding car!

We hope this helps you remember to wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions!

Ask Tidewater Orthodontics: What can Invisalign do for my oral health?

Did you know that besides straightening your teeth, Invisalign can also help your oral health? When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics is so different than wearing traditional metallic braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign at our convenient Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake offices than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing:
Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, please give us a call at (757) 340-7000 for a FREE initial consultation. We hope you have a great weekend!

Back to school with Tidewater Orthodontics

Now that many of the schools are back in session here in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk, Drs. Dailey and Ashby would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance this fall. With school, clubs and sports to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit Tidewater Orthodontics. In order to accommodate all of our patients' busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you this fall.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you're unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call at (757) 340-7000 if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

See you soon! :)

Cool kids have fun with braces, from Tidewater Orthodontics

Braces today are “cool” and—many would say—even “fun.” These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as Invisalign and the Damon System, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with Drs. Dailey and Ashby, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Has your child or teen visited Drs. Dailey or Ashby for a consultation? If not, please give us a call and let us help your child begin the journey to a gorgeous smile!

Tips for summer traveling with teens, from Tidewater Orthodontics

Hey, parents! Have you been making my plans for a summer family vacation? Here at Tidewater Orthodontics, we know that summer is the season when many families choose to hit the open road—or catch a flight—to make those memories together. That’s why we want to share a few tips for summer travel from our friends at Yahoo! Shine.

1) Have your teens set the pace—and even the itinerary. No teen wants to be dragged around a city that they have no interest in, by allowing everyone a voice in the trip itinerary, children and parents alike become more invested in the vacation.

2) Everyone offers up a playlist. A trip soundtrack isn’t complete without a hodgepodge of every family member’s favorite music tracks!

3) Set a limit on phones/electronics use. This decision has to be specific to your family, but a good rule of thumb is that if you’re setting the rules for minute limits or check-ins that all family members should stick to them—not just teens and tweens.

4) Keep food and drinks on hand. Sometimes a snack is all you need to stay cheery- hunger can oftentimes create unnecessary arguments and tension between families.

5) Don’t make them clean the hotel room. While on vacation, the same rules that apply at home for cleaning don’t necessarily apply while staying in a hotel.

6) Set a gift shop budget. These costs can add up quickly, so be sure to set limits ahead of time!

7) Give them a little freedom. When traveling with tweens and teens, it is important that they are able to have some areas, maybe a five-block radius or even the hotel lobby, where they are able to wander without the whole family.

We hope these tips are useful for helping you plan that perfect family vacation this summer! For more articles on parenting and for the parenting pick of the day, check out Yahoo! Shine. Also, if you have any great family vacation photos, feel free to post them on our Facebook page!

Happy travels,

-Your friends at Tidewater Orthodontics

Invisalign Teen™ at Tidewater Orthodontics

Our team at Tidewater Orthodontics knows how important image can be for today's teens. Even the thought of having metal brackets and wires constantly attached to teeth may intensify the already-delicate confidence of many Virginia teens. But... not to worry! There is now a clear alternative to traditional braces! The team at Tidewater Orthodontics thought we'd remind you that Invisalign Teen™ gives you a whole new way to wear braces for a "clearly" beautiful smile!

So how does Invisalign Teen work, you ask? Much in the same fashion as Invisalign, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to teenagers’ lifestyles. For instance, Invisalign Teen is designed with “compliance indicators” that fade from dark to light during the two week period that particular tray is used and once it has faded teens know to change trays. Each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken. Another huge benefit for the patient!

The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from nine to 18 months. If your teen is considering orthodontic treatment, please contact us and we’ll answer any questions you may have about Invisalign Teen. We are also happy to send you a free information kit from Invisalign or schedule you a free consultation. Just give us a call!

Drs. Ashby and Dailey, helping you save face this summer

With summer finally here, our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics thought it would be a good time to remind our patients to take care of their mouth and appliances when out on the field. After all, the summer months bring with them a greater chance of our athletes damaging their teeth since you are out and about and/or playing sports. If you are playing sports this summer, it's important that you consult Dr. John Ashby or Dr. Curtis Dailey for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. Mouth guards are advised by our doctors and staff for playing summer sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and many, many others.

In case of any accident involving the face, we want you to check your mouth and appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances are damaged, please schedule an appointment to see us immediately. And don’t forget to ask us—Drs. Ashby and Dailey will be more than happy to provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment!

Our team at Tidewater Orthodontics will tell you that only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at our office.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your Independence Day weekend!

Invisalign® Q&A with Drs. Ashby and Dailey

Perhaps you've been wondering what Invisalign treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics is really like, and what effect it will have on your daily activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you're in treatment? You're not alone in your concerns! Dr. Farina and our team thought we’d share this list of questions and answers for anyone pondering Invisalign treatment. Remember, Drs. Ashby and Dailey are Certified Invisalign Providers.

How does Invisalign really work?

Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Will I experience any pain with Invisalign?

Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.

Are there any foods I should avoid?

You can eat normally during the entire course of treatment. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. Simply take the aligners out before each meal, brush when you're finished eating, then reinsert the aligners afterward.

How often must I wear the aligners?

Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.

How often must I visit Tidewater Orthodontics during my treatment?

For most patients, visits every 4-to-6 weeks are frequent enough for us to determine that your treatment is progressing properly. Drs. Ashby or Dailey will provide you with a specific schedule that supports your individual treatment plan. Give us a call to learn more and enjoy your weekend!

Tidewater Orthodontics want to know: Is reading on your to-do list this summer?

With summer only weeks away, some of us have been thinking increasingly about the importance of reading. Sure it’s easier to go play ball or kick back and watch television, but reading during the summer is a vital step in being prepared for classes in the fall and maintaining your skill level.

Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics would be happy to provide a few titles. You may also ask a local librarian for some ideas or check out various summer reading lists that we came across.

Your friend, fluoride! From Tidewater Orthodontics

There are so many ways you protect your pearly whites throughout your treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there's another way to keep your teeth sparkling and healthy during your treatment?

Enter fluoride. Yes, fluoride, a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay, can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement.

When choosing your own fluoride product, however, be sure to check for the American Dental Association seal of approval. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness.

We hope that's helpful! Give us a call for more information about fluoride or your treatment!

Tidewater Orthodontics want to know: What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend?

Memorial Day weekend is a time Americans remember all those who bravely gave their lives for our country. It’s also the unofficial start of summer, and for many kids, getting out of town for three days with parents after being cooped up in school for the past nine months spells sweet, sweet relief.

We thought we'd ask: What are you up to this Memorial Day weekend? What will you be doing on your day off from school or work? After all, it’s unofficially the start of summer and a time for a season full of vacations, adventures and great memories. Whether you are headed to a barbecue, a camping trip, or just having fun in the sun this weekend, we’d like to hear all about it!

Tidewater Orthodontics, supporting National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Did you know the month of May is observed as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? May was first declared National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by President Reagan in 1983 to encourage Americans to incorporate more activity into their lives. The reminder is even more significant today as kids are distracted by television, social networking and video games. Kids living an active lifestyle can improve their health, productivity and overall well being, and best of all? It doesn’t have to take a lot of time!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines for your reference. The guidelines call for children and teenagers to exercise one hour every day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, dancing and jumping rope).

At Tidewater Orthodontics we always encourage our patients to exercise or participate in sports. However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard when playing sports. To learn more about how often you should exercise, we recommend you check out this series of helpful articles about kids and exercise, courtesy of our friends at KidsHealth.org.

Are you visiting your dentist regularly?

Our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics want to know: Is your child brushing his or her teeth twice a day during treatment? If yes, that’s fantastic!

But, don’t forget that it’s also important for your child to visit the dentist every six months in addition to brushing their teeth a couple times a day (and visiting us at Tidewater Orthodontics, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. During the visit, your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show your child how to properly brush and floss their teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will also check the health of your child’s mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If your child has not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment - just ask us - Drs. Ashby, Dorfman, Dailey and Owens know plenty of great dentists in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake!

Tidewater Orthodontics want to know: Are there teeth grinders in your house?

If you live with a teeth grinder, you could be familiar with the unpleasant sound of grind... grind... grind... especially recently. A recent study published in the journal Head & Face Medicine in March suggests that people—adults and kids—faced with stress tend to cope by grinding their teeth. In addition, the Chicago Dental Society suggests that since the recession began in 2007, teeth grinding, or bruxism, has been on the rise.

The Chicago Dental Society surveyed more than 250 members about the connection between stress and oral health. Nearly 75 percent of dentists said their patients reported increased stress over the past year, largely due to the economic recession. During stressful times, teeth grinding can be a nuisance that causes headaches and sleep problems, but it also can cause lasting problems for your teeth and gums, including chipped teeth, worn enamel, chronic pain, or even TMJ, a painful jaw disorder.

The first step of recovering from teeth grinding is noticing the problem. Symptoms of teeth grinding include:

• Sensitivity in the teeth
• Tightness or pain in the jaw
• Dull headaches, earaches, or facial pain
• Chipped, worn down, or loose teeth

An important thing to remember is that people frequently grind their teeth in response to stress, and taking measures to reduce or eliminate stress can help solve the problem. If the teeth-grinder in your house can’t stop, schedule an appointment to see us by giving us a call. Drs. Ashby and Dorfman and our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics can help determine the cause of the problem.

Have a great weekend!

April is National Facial Protection Month! From the team at Tidewater Orthodontics

You may remember that in mid-February, our team blogged about the advantage of wearing a mouth guard when playing sports. Well, we thought a reminder today wouldn’t hurt. You see, April is National Facial Protection Month, and it’s a good time to remind our young athletes about staying safe on the field this spring. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.

And to our staff at Tidewater Orthodontics, that's simply unacceptable.

By simply wearing a properly fitted mouth guard, these accidents could prevent this along with other traumatic facial injuries.

The above video from our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists outlines five ways you can protect yourself this spring and summer. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our team at Tidewater Orthodontics. And remember to stay safe and have fun!

The importance of retainers, from Dr. John Ashby

If you recently completed treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics, congratulations! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Ashby or Dr. Dailey will provide you with retainers. Here are some things to remember when you receiver your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing aloud to get used to them quicker.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Try to remember to bring your retainers to your appointments.
* Retainer replacement is expensive...with proper care they will last for years!
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, lacrosse, etc.).
* Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.

The importance of mouth guards, from Tidewater Orthodontics

Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s almost springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult with Dr. Ashby or Dr. Dailey for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball and soccer. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements we are trying to achieve.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Tidewater Orthodontics. And don’t forget to ask us—our doctors will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment.

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at Tidewater Orthodontics.

Moooooove over Gum Disease! From Tidewater Orthodontics

Is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A recent study from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (also known as gum disease).

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth, our doctors say. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite, and every sip you are preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles and good oral health!

For more information about keeping your teeth healthy, give us a call!
